Standard Process Canine Renal Support: A Holistic Veterinarian’s Therapeutic Review

I am Dr. Candy Akers and I have dedicated my career to the comprehensive care of pets. The renal system is an intricate system, comprising the kidneys and urinary tract, and is fundamental to the overall health and vitality of both dogs and cats. It plays a pivotal role in filtering blood toxins, balancing electrolytes, and maintaining healthy blood pressure. Beyond these well-known functions, it is instrumental in supporting the immune system, regulating red blood cell levels, and ensuring a balanced body pH.

In my years of practice, I have observed a concerning prevalence of kidney disease, especially among older cats. Research indicates that a staggering 30-50% of cats may experience significant renal challenges in their lifetime. Recognizing the signs early is crucial. Symptoms often include changes in urination patterns, loss of appetite, and lethargy.

The causes of kidney disease are varied, ranging from genetic predisposition to environmental factors. However, there is hope for management and mitigation. I have found the Standard Process Canine Renal Support to be a cornerstone in the effective treatment of this condition. These supplements are formulated with a blend of ingredients that support optimal kidney function and overall well-being.

In my professional opinion, early detection and intervention are paramount. Regular check-ups, a balanced diet, and the strategic use of supplements like Canine Renal Support can make a significant difference in the life quality of pets afflicted with kidney disease. Together, we can ensure that our beloved companions lead healthy, vibrant lives, marked by wellness and vitality. Your pet’s health is my priority, and I am committed to providing the most advanced, compassionate care available.

Common Potential Causes of Kidney Disease

  • Genetic/Congenital: Some pets are born with genetic predispositions or congenital abnormalities that affect the structure and function of their kidneys.
  • Toxins: Exposure to harmful substances, including certain foods, plants, and chemicals, can damage the kidneys.
  • Polycystic Kidney Disease: A genetic disorder characterized by the growth of numerous cysts in the kidneys, leading to decreased function.
  • Urinary Tract Obstruction (Blocked): Blockages in the urinary tract can lead to increased pressure on the kidneys and potential damage.
  • Medications: Some drugs, especially when used inappropriately or in excess, can have adverse effects on kidney function.
  • Chronic UTI’s: Recurrent urinary tract infections can lead to scarring and damage to the kidneys over time.
  • Long-term Retainment of Urine: Holding urine for extended periods can increase pressure on the kidneys and lead to damage.
  • Trauma: Injuries involving the kidneys or surrounding areas can lead to acute kidney damage.
  • Heavy Metal Toxicosis: Exposure to heavy metals like lead, mercury, or arsenic can lead to acute or chronic kidney disease.

Understanding these potential causes is crucial for prevention and early intervention. If you suspect your pet may be at risk for kidney disease, I recommend a thorough veterinary evaluation to diagnose and address any underlying issues promptly. Early detection and appropriate management can significantly improve the quality and longevity of your pet’s life.

41-60 lbs½ teaspoon twice per day
61-80 lbs¾ teaspoon twice per day

  • Because these supplements are made from whole foods, and not chemicals, doses are highly palatable.  In fact, it often seems like animals instinctively know what their body needs and gobble it up quickly.

When beginning supplementation, I recommend the following taper-up process. This is only because these ingredients are so nutrient-dense. We can decrease your pet’s adjustment period, which may result in a soft stool. This adjustment phase is generally 1-2 days long and normal consistency of stool will return to normal without treatment.

  • WEEK 1                1/8 teaspoon
  • WEEK 2                ¼ teaspoon
  • WEEK 3                ½ teaspoon

Side Effect of Standard Process Canine Renal Support

Since these nutritional supplements are made from food, there is little to no risk of side effects. The only side effect I’ve ever seen is diarrhea if the pet gets a gigantic dose. For example, if a pet eats a whole bottle. If I had a dollar for every time one of my pets ate a whole bottle, I’d have a pretty full piggy bank. Since pets love these products so much, we recommend keeping them in a cabinet or someplace that your pet cannot get to.
