Standard Process Enteric System Support for Cats: A Holistic Veterinarian’s Therapeutic Review

The following information is a summary and review based on Dr. Candy’s professional experience and recommendations. Any summary or statement has not been provided nor influenced by the manufacturer.

I am Dr. Candy Akers and I want to emphasize the profound connection between your cat’s gut health and their overall well-being. Contrary to the popular saying, “What happens in the gut does not stay in the gut,” as noted by Dr. Alessio Fasano. The enteric system is a complex network that extends beyond the stomach, intestines, and colon, incorporating the mouth, salivary glands, liver, pancreas, and immune system.

Recent studies underscore the integral relationship between the digestive tract and the central nervous system. It’s essential to recognize that 75% of the immune system is rooted in the gut, and a staggering 70% of serotonin, a crucial neurotransmitter, is produced there. Thus, maintaining a balanced digestive system is paramount to your cat’s health.

In today’s world, several modern conditions pose significant threats to our pets’ gastrointestinal health. The consumption of overly processed food, the antiseptic properties of chlorine in water, and the pervasive presence of glyphosates (Round-Up) are detrimental to the enteric system. Originally an antibiotic for humans, glyphosate now permeates our food supply, adversely affecting the beneficial bacteria essential for our pets’ health.

I advocate for the Standard Process Feline Enteric Support Supplement as a potent remedy to these challenges. It’s vital to be attuned to signs of enteric system weakness in your cat, as early detection and intervention can significantly enhance their quality of life. This supplement is enriched with ingredients specifically formulated to restore and optimize gut health, thereby bolstering the immune system and enhancing neurological functions.

Prioritizing your cat’s enteric health is a holistic approach to ensuring their overall vitality. By mitigating the impacts of modern dietary and environmental challenges with targeted supplements, we can foster a balanced and robust digestive system, laying the foundation for optimal physical and mental health. The adage “All disease begins in the gut” may be cliché, but it underscores a timeless truth about the centrality of gut health in the holistic well-being of our beloved pets.

  • Weight Loss or Weight Gain: Unexplained changes in weight can be a red flag for enteric system problems.
  • Stiffness or Arthritis: Inflammation in the joints can sometimes be traced back to gut health.
  • Undigested Food in Feces: This indicates that food is not being properly broken down and absorbed.

Important Supplement Information:

  • These supplements should all be given twice a day.
  • Most clients sprinkle it on their pet’s food.
  • Because these supplements are made from whole foods, and not chemicals, doses are highly palatable.  In fact, it often seems like animals instinctively know what their body needs and gobble it up quickly.

When beginning supplementation, I recommend the following taper-up process. This is only because these ingredients are so nutrient-dense. We can decrease your pet’s adjustment period, which may result in a soft stool. This adjustment phase is generally 1-2 days long and normal consistency of stool will return to normal without treatment.

  • Give your cat 1 tablet twice daily OR 1/4 scoop of the canine, or as directed

Side Effect of Standard Process Feline Enteric Support

Since these nutritional supplements are made from food, there is little to no risk of side effects. The only side effect I’ve ever seen is diarrhea if the pet gets a gigantic dose. For example, if a pet eats a whole bottle. If I had a dollar for every time one of my pets ate a whole bottle, I’d have a pretty full piggy bank. Since pets love these products so much, we recommend keeping them in a cabinet or someplace that your pet cannot get to.

A Note From the Manufacturer:

“Made for cats as well as dogs, Enteric Support brings together a combination as whole food nutrients and tissue factors. This combination provides synergistic, multidimensional support for the diseased intestinal tract. Intestinal physiology is a complex interaction of many physiologic activities. Therefore, the primary focus of this product is support of the intestinal mucosa, digestive secretions, intestinal motility, intestinal immunity, and liver. Providing nutrients and important substrates for each of these areas can facilitate both repair processes and optimal function.

Enteric Support is an important part of the support plan for all patients with GI disease. The range of ingredients supports the intestine in multiple ways that facilitate repair of the intestinal tract. Areas that are supported include salivary, gastric, biliary, and endocrine pancreatic secretions.

A healthy digestive tract is critical to the overall health and well-being of your pet. The digestive health of an animal can impact not only the breakdown and absorption of nutrients, but can also have a significant impact on other body systems such as the immune system, liver, bone marrow, or adrenal glands. Canine Enteric Support and Feline Enteric Support contain a variety of functional foods that “feed” the various parts of the digestive system.”
